NetSpeed Learning Solutions: Engaging People, Igniting Performance

Demand Strong for Classroom-to-Virtual Instructional Design Skills

Cynthia Clay at ASTDSeattle, WA May 31, 2012 — As more and more training content moves from the face-to-face classroom to online delivery, demand is on the rise within the training industry for skills in successfully repurposing content for the virtual environment. The demand was highlighted earlier this month when Cynthia Clay, CEO of NetSpeed Learning Solutions, presented a concurrent session titled "Crossing the Chasm to Valuable, Engaging Virtual Facilitation" at the ASTD International Conference and Exhibition on May 7, 2012 in Denver, Colorado.

The 75-minute session, which was described in the program as offering "techniques that build collaborative learning, innovative uses of the chat and polling functions", drew a standing-room crowd of over 250 people.

As a follow up to the ASTD session, Clay invited everyone who attended the session to join her in a one-hour webinar on May 22. The webinar allowed the participants to experience first-hand the interactivity of an engaging facilitated webinar. 100% of the webinar attendees rated it very good or excellent.

Clay explains the interest in the topic: "Many organizations are struggling with the transition from face-to-face classroom to live virtual learning. When organizations first begin to transfer content for virtual delivery, they think it's as simple as uploading the PowerPoint into WebEx and talking over the slides. But they quickly discover that learners stop participating and start multitasking. With both participants and trainers bored and frustrated, very little learning takes place. Trainers have a difficult time losing the visual references people get in the classroom where you can watch the body language and assess the engagement. Until trainers learn to use the interactive tools, they feel unmoored, and are hungry for techniques to deliver the same engaging training in Adobe Connect, WebEx, or Live Meeting that they used in the face-to-face classroom."

Clay's book, Great Webinars: How to Create Interactive Learning That Is Captivating, Informative, and Fun, published by Pfeiffer (John Wiley & Sons), which was available at the ASTD bookstore during the conference, sold out after her concurrent session.

Cynthia Clay is President/CEO of NetSpeed Learning Solutions. Besides Great Webinars, she is also the author of Peer Power: Transforming Workplace Relationships, published by Jossey-Bass, a division of John Wiley & Sons.
